Are you an actor who sings or a singer who acts? Putting on a concert is a great way to get your name out there.

Here are some things to think about before you plan your next cabaret or concert.

Why do it

Why would you want to do a concert? If you are involved in music at all - as a writer, performer, composer - it's a great way to get your work in front of people. Also if you have made a recording, it is a great way to sell copies of your CD. If people enjoy your live performance, they are often wanting to purchase a recording of you to take home to relive the experience.

Managing it all

Putting on a concert really comes down to management. You 've got to put together a budget and manage it along the way. You need to assemble a team of people - musicians, technicians, performers - who are going to help you to make it happen. You need to find a venue, negotiate a contract and manage the relationship with them. It will be down to you to manage the process from start to finish. But the good thing about this is that you are in control of the end product. Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve and then don't deviate from it.

Calling in favours

In a perfect world, you would pay everyone fairly for their time. That should be the ultimate aim for you if you are going to continue to work as an actor/producer. However, the reality is that when you are starting out you are probably going to be restrained by your budget. So don't be afraid to call in favours. Ask friends, colleagues or friends of friends to help you out. Make it clear that you aren't raking in profits while asking them to work for free, but sell them on your idea and give them something interesting and creative to work on. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to help out.

Many performers in long-running shows on Broadway or in the West End get bored with doing the same thing eight times a week. Many are dying to do something interesting in a one-off concert just to keep their own creative spark alive. If you know some of them, don't be afraid to ask. Part of producing is having the guts to ask.

Licencing

Do check out whether you require licensing to perform someone else's music. In the UK, usually the venue has a licence which covers you performing material in their theatre, but the responsibility rests on your shoulders to ask if you require permission or licensing to publically perform any material. If in doubt, ask!

Budgeting

What kind of costs do you need to consider? The venue - what is the rental cost on your venue? What does that include/not include? Things to find out about include: box office staff, front of house staff, ticketing, technicians, lights, and sound. Also you want to be clear about when you can get access to the space and when you have to be out of the space. Get it all in writing.

If you require any additional gear like lights, sound equipment, pianos, microphones, you will need to look at renting them. Often they aren't as expensive as you think, but the costs can add up quickly. Be realistic about what you really require.

Musicians generally don't work for free, and really you shouldn't ask them to; but sometimes if they are friends they might give you a reduced rate or just let you cover their expenses. The more musicians you use, the more it costs you, so be realistic about how many you need and what your budget will allow.

Marketing

Use social media, like Twitter and Facebook to help spread the word about your event. Also flyers and posters don't cost a lot of money and help spread the word. Ask all your friends to help promote you.

When you do have your concert, try to capture an email address for your audience members so you can communicate with them about your next event. It's all about building your audience base. Sometimes giving some of the money away to a charity is a great way to increase your profile and garner media attention. And it feels good.

Cross-promote

Concerts are not likely to make you rich, but they are a great way to build your audience, develop your skills as a performer and if you have a CD, make sure you have a table set up to sell them as people are leaving.

Putting on a cabaret or a concert could be the next step on your career ladder.
